Biloxi Police Add New Tool to Catch Drunk Drivers

Biloxi police and law enforcement along the Coast spent much of their New Year’s weekend trying to keep people safe. They beefed up patrols and even brought in new equipment. The Mobile Intoxilator 8000 was on the streets working to prevent one of the busiest times of the year from becoming the deadliest.

Increased Patrols & Tech

The holiday weekend often means more traffic and more partying. This if a recipe for auto accidents. The new mobile unit allows officers to perform sobriety tests in the field, not just at the station. The device allows officers to administer breath tests and have results within a minute. This can save officers and citizens both time and money in the long run. Mississippi is an implied consent state. This means that drivers can be faced with a fine or license suspension if they refuse to submit to a chemical test after being lawfully arrested by an officer with probable cause. Officers hope this new technology paired with increased traffic stops and sobriety checkpoints will decrease the number of accidents.

Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

The dangers of drunk driving are well known. Auto accidents causing property damage, injury and even death are often the result when drunk drivers are on the road. It is important to remember that even a little alcohol can impair your judgement and reflexes. There is never a good reason to drive when impaired. The legal limit for alcohol is .08 blood alcohol content, but drivers can still be charged with a DUI if they are below the limit and show signs of impairment. The penalties for a DUI in Mississippi include jail time, fines, and even license suspension.  A second DUI conviction in Mississippi comes with a minimum jail sentence of 5 days.

Identifying Drunk Drivers

Police use visual cues to identify potentially drunk drivers. Common signs of impaired drivers include:

  • Problems maintaining lane position or failure to stay in one’s lane;
  • Speed and braking problems such as a failure to maintain proper speed or sudden acceleration or braking;
  • A failure to maintain vigilance when it comes to surroundings and changing driving conditions; and/or
  • The inability to judge the road and proximity to objects as seen in jerky or sharp turns or over-correcting.

Safety Should Always Be Your Main Concern

The safety of all those on the roadways is priority number one. One bad decision can cost someone their life and livelihood. There are additional options for getting home safely, including designated drivers, ride share companies such as Uber, which operates on the Mississippi Gulf Coast,, public transportation and even shuttle services on busy holiday weekends.
