Morgan Freeman Still Wears Glove, 10 Years After Mississippi Car Accident

Hand

All eyes were on Morgan Freeman as he accepted a Life Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 21, 2018. The Biloxi Sun Herald reported on the award presentation, noting that the celebrated actor first stood on a stage more than seven decades ago to play the role of Little Boy Blue. However, Mr. Freeman also attracted attention on the SAG red carpet earlier in the evening, as many fashion commentators noted that he was wearing one glove on his left hand. The reason: A 2008 Mississippi car accident resulted in severe injuries to the hand, leaving nerve damage that has worsened over the last 10 years. The glove is a compression device that keeps blood flowing in his nonfunctioning hand.

Any type of harm from a car accident can be serious, but a hand injury may be one of the most significant considering that we rely upon this part of the body for many daily tasks. If you suffered a hand injury in a crash, here is some important information you need to know.

How Hand Injuries Occur in an Auto Accident

There are many ways you may hurt your hand in a crash, and instinct is often to blame. In the seconds before the collision, you may use your hands to brace against the impact, such as by grasping the steering wheel, dashboard, door, or ceiling of the vehicle. Some victims suffer injury when the airbag deploys or the hands come into contact with loose objects in the car.

Some of the worst hand injuries in an auto collision are the result of the driver gripping the inside spokes of the steering wheel, rather than the outer rim. When the wheel spins in an accident, hands may get caught and thrashed around violently.

Common Injuries to the Hand

The impact of a car crash puts tremendous pressure on the hands, fingers, and wrists. In such situations, typical injuries may include:

  • Fractures: There are 27 bones in the human hand, many of which are relatively delicate. Blunt trauma from an auto collision can cause fractures or even crush the bones.
  • Sprains: The ligaments in the hand connect bones at the joint. When a ligament is stretched or torn, the injury is classified as a sprain.
  • Strains: Tendons that connect muscle to bone are also subject to stretching or tearing, leading to a strain injury.
  • Dislocated Joints: When the bones of a joint are lodged out of place, the injury can be extremely painful. A dislocated joint is usually obvious, because the fingers will bend at unnatural angles.
  • Amputations: In an extremely severe car accident, it is even possible for a hand or finger to be amputated. Plus, even if the extremity remains attached, a surgical amputation may be necessary in the aftermath of the crash.
